Just Be Your Creative Self… That is how you will change the world.

I’ve been working up the courage for open mic events and the nerves of playing in front of others. This afternoon, while playing mandolin outside in my yard (for the neighbours and trail walkers to hear), I had a realization. I tend to inspire others. I don’t mean to however, I have always stuck to my values and strong ethics. Somehow this creates positive change and a vibrancy in others. I wouldn’t know this was happening — but people often tell me…

“You know, I was in this really stressful situation. I was going to let loose on all of my family so I calmed myself down and thought, ‘what would Lindy do?’ …And then I meditated! My anger melted into calm — and I gave each of them Reiki!”

Or, in the same week…

“I was at this event today and I ran into [inspiring female political figure]. It was just her and I in the hallway! I immediately thought, ‘what would Lindy do?’ So I asked them if they knew where the bathroom was… Isn’t that hilarious!?”

Or…

“You’re such an inspiration. Every time we’re here, you’re just doing these really cool things. I mean we know your life sucks, but you’re always have such a positive outlook. The work you do. Your child. The things going on in your house. You are just… So Inspiring! Like, do you even KNOW? I just… Want you to know this man.” (This was back in the day when friend’s from back home were visiting — this one was having a drunk I love you moment… So excuse the flubbering.)

Or…

A family member back in the day (same day as above); “we don’t know what you are doing, or why, but when you get an idea we stand back. We have no idea how it is even possible — but you do it! And it’s hilarious! And we don’t have to worry even though we do anyway.” (For the record, I am getting back to that day).

And…

My neighbours are the ones I seem to have most impact on with those from previous (and current) neighbourhoods now walking barefoot all summer and playing (and in one case, purchasing) their pianos that otherwise sit as furniture.

And now on with my realization…

On with my realization. Earlier this year, I had vowed to connect with ALL my neighbours so I can a) be invited to backyard BBQs and have a life, and b) have more people to play music with. So, as I’m playing this afternoon, I began remembering the times I have inspired others without even knowing. I realized that now is one of those times! I know there are neighbours now contemplating bringing their guitars and bass guitars out of the corner. As I keep showing up, they actually will dust it off and play some old tunes… Eventually, everybody is going to be rotating backyards to have jam sessions and neighourhood talent shows.

For now? I actively post events on a MeetUp Group — and you are welcome to bring your instruments! (…But not welcome to bring your screens.)

PEACE.
