Why Doesn’t Anybody Talk About the Internet? And It’s Effects on Grandparents…

Why doesn’t anybody talk about the internet? It is something that has come into our lives en masse and completely turned our worlds upside down. Our fingers hurt, our eyes hurt, our heads hurt, our backs hurt. Our relationships hurt, our kids hurt… Our grandma’s and grandpa’s hurt.

Recently, I had been in a space where a family had gathered. Children, parents, extended family and others were just hanging around. At one point, when the rest of the family was out and about, a great-grandparent I noticed, had seen an opportunity to connect with their great-grandchild. This child, no more than five years old, had been sitting alone for quite some time focusing on the tablet in their lap.

Such a lovely connection. Grandparents live for their grandchildren, do they not? They are the Light of their life. Grandparents are legendary and hold all the stories and histories of the families. And great-grandparents, oh my, what a Blessing… At least, that was the general feeling from this particular family…

As the grandparent went to sit next to the grandchild, the child, tablet in hand, bellowed out a “get away from me!” They jumped off the couch and, with a scrunched up face, ran out of the room. Child was gone… Great-grandparent was left sitting on the couch alone and seemingly stunned…

I have been witnessing the impacts on screens in families for well over a decade. This isn’t a matter of “well, how do you know what was going on for the child at the time.”  What I saw was a child out of attunement – a disconnect from the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual space around them. This child was offered an opportunity to be brought back into Humaness by the closeness of another Human but, in a passive frame of mind, the emotions of the child on screen were impaired. A reaction had occurred…

Why don’t we talk about the internet?
